(KPL) Over 50,000 brand new vehicles registered in Vientiane, of which 60% was motorbike last year leading to worsening the existing traffic jam and road accidents in Vientiane Capital. The high enrollment of vehicles is due to better socio-economic development and people having high income as well as high demand of vehicles, according to a recent data of the Vientiane Vehicle and Driving Control Unit.
Between January to November 2012, there were 56,642 brand new vehicles, of which 5,419 are automobiles, 7,693 pick-up trucks, 2,201 jeeps, 2,577 vans, 3,228 heavy trucks, 165 buses and 35,359 motorbikes were enrolled with the Vientiane Vehicle and Driving Control Unit.
Since 2000 to late last year, there are 578,805 vehicles saw a sharply increase in Vientiane Capital. As the result, Vientiane has suffer from traffic jam in city currently and also increasing road accidents
The statistic record in 2001 had 220,491 vehicles nationwide and there were 4,681 road accidents claimed 372 lives. But in 2011 the amount of vehicles jumped up 1.14 million vehicles countrywide and over 6,000 road accidents claimed 856 lives and left a considerable huge damage cost, amounting to 2% of GDP.
